How to Get Candle Wax Out of Clothes

Spilled candle wax on your favorite shirt? Don’t worry — wax stains look tough, but they can be removed with a few simple steps. Follow this easy guide to save your clothes.

Step 1: Let the wax harden

Never rub warm wax — it only spreads deeper into the fabric. Place the clothing in the freezer for 30 minutes or apply an ice pack until the wax is solid.

Step 2: Scrape off the wax

Use a dull knife, spoon, or credit card to gently scrape away as much hardened wax as possible. Be careful not to damage the fabric.

Step 3: Melt and absorb the residue

Put the stained area between two paper towels (or brown paper bags). Press with a warm iron (no steam). The heat melts the wax, and the paper absorbs it. Replace the paper and repeat until no more wax transfers.

Step 4: Treat any leftover stain

If colored wax leaves a dye mark, apply dish soap or laundry stain remover to the spot. Rub gently, then wash the garment in warm water (check the care label first).

Step 5: Wash and dry

Wash the clothing as usual. Before using the dryer, check the stain — heat can set it permanently. Repeat the process if needed.

✅ Quick Tips:

  • Always let wax harden before removing.

  • Test heat on a small hidden area first.

  • For delicate fabrics like silk or wool, use professional dry cleaning.
